Single filiment Brake/Tail light

Post by wa1nca »

Its not that easy to change the socket for the dual 1157 bulb
I would add a resistor as shown in my diagram

Note the rear taillight bulb has to be a 1157 led bulb for this to work
The one Jon used and also myself is a 12 volt version so you will need to find a 6 volt 1157

You can then use a single filiment 1156 6 volt led if you add a dropping resistor as shown for your bags Brake /Tail light
I made this for a 12 volt system but the theory would be the same
The value of the resistor would be different than shown for a 6 volt led bulb

With the tail light on the 1156 bulb would get about 4 volts
When the brake light is on the bulb will get full battery voltage
So with the tail on or off when the brake is depressed the brake light will be brighter than the tail light if on

Another advantage of this design you only need 2 wires (ground/Signal) not 3 to have both Tail/Brake to work
I installed the resistor in the tail light housing

Not so hard...

Post by miller6997 »

I bought inexpensive generic 1157 bulb sockets at my local parts store and had no problem installing them in my Hella lights. The only problematic part was enlarging the hole in the fiberglass bag so that it would accept the socket. I wired the socket to the tail light and turn signal circuits and did not install a resistor. Everything works.

Original Enduro Bulb Socket

Post by wa1nca »

Jon
The original socket also holds everything in place as one can see by this pic
This is why it is not as easy to change the socket as in your aftermarket enduro bags

Got it

I see what you mean. Those lights are different (and apparently much sturdier) than the ones I have. I can see how it would not be easy to change them over.

Thanks Tommy and Jon for replies.
I am somewhat confused however (not unusual.). You stated that for this to work, the rear taillight has to be a 1157 Led bulb. Did you mean a 1156 led bulb?
Also, since I'm a bit electronically challenged, what value resistor would I need for a 6 volt system and where would I get one?
Thanks in advance.

Taillight

Post by FL54 »

Upon further review of the diagram, I see that the taillight is an 1157 and the saddlebag lights are 1156's. I already have a 1157 led taillight so that's good but still don't know what value resistor to get.
Thanks.

I used a 1157 led bulb in the rear taillight because the socket is for a dual filament bulb but wired in only the bright (brake side) side of the bulb
In your setup you would disconnect the tail light wire and connect it to one side of the resistor and also connect the licence plate bulb
and leave the brake wire were it is already connected

I used a 120 ohm resistor in my 12 volt setup
So 60 ohm should work on a 6 volt system like yours
56 ohms is a standard valve

You can order from this site
https://www.ebay.com/itm/163522641295?V ... 3522641295

Select 56 ohm from the drop down box
Great price 10 for $2.65 and free shipping
I use this site for resistors for projects and stereo and guitar amp repairs

Bulbs

Post by FL54 »

Thanks Tommy for the detailed explanation and kind offer to render assistance. It appears that I only need to order a couple of 1156 led bulbs and the 56 ohm resistor. Seems like a simpler, cleaner method of getting to the solution.
Thanks again

About resistors...

Post by miller6997 »

All of the 1156 and 1157 LEDs I have installed are working normally. I have not installed any resistors, though I do have a flasher that works with a combination of incandescent and LED lights.
