R69S speedometer question

Post by jwonder »

Hello all,

My new R69S came with a 0,715 speedometer. After looking in the Barrington book they do not list one of these as an option but I found it listed on many sites as a R69S correct ratio. Any info here other than oversight why it may not be listed in the Barrington manual?

Just want to make sure its right before I spend $$'s to get it rebuilt.

Thanks!!

I've not seen 0.715 in literature I have. I see 0.75 which is the kilometer version and on the MPH side the number would be 1.2 for the R69S. That would be for a final drive ratio of 25:8.

Where have you seen that listed on the internet?

This link on our site: http://www.vintagebmw.org/v7/node/13206 (see the speedo pic)

And I googled "bmw r69s .715" and I found a bunch of them. Some on ebay and others in other areas.

Any help is appreciated!

In the end, any speedometer

Post by schrader7032 »

In the end, any speedometer will work...it just has to match the final drive ratio otherwise the indicated speeds will be wrong.

This is about the only other site that I've seen that has info on speedometers and final drives:

No 0.715 listed, though.

I looked through the manuals

I looked through the manuals on John's Beemer site and no model is shown with .715 ratio for Kph speedos. Your's is in Kph, and with BMW logo? Possibly, the R60 with a ratio of .70 actually used a .715?

Tachometer

I spoke to the previous (and only other owner) and he said that is the original. No reason for me not to believe it. The date on the back of it proper as well.

Intersting!

Thanks for all the research and digging. I am planning to restore it with that speedometer until someone tells me otherwise! :-)

Hi James,

you're right, you find some 0,715 speedos for the R69S ... but you don't find them in any document which lists VDO speedos for Beemers. I found a site where the say that the 0,715 works with a 32:10 rear drive ...

hope this helps

32:10?

Post by The Plunger »

Don't know of any final drive with that ratio. As I said, the 32:11 of the R60 is really close. Are these available speedos the cheap re-pops?
