Rear fender hinge pin removal

Post by 1967 R502 »

As with most thing on my bike, the rear fender hinge pin is stuck. It cannot be pulled out... it can not be driven out ala Barrington’s recommendation. Heat and Kroil amount to nothing. So the typical drill. Anyone got any creative solution for removing this pin? Btw. The hinge works fine... I just can’t get the pin out!

Short of prying the loops out

Short of prying the loops out a bit I don't have a clue. It must be rusted solid to something!

more heat

get it red hot. drive it out while hot. that loosens anything rusty

assuming you will be refinishing the tins.

Pivot Pin

Post by pokie »

I have seen the pivot pin riveted on both ends, welded on both ends, staked in both end loops as well as spot welded. If the hinge works well, I'd say to leave it alone. If you really need to get the pin out, drilling from both ends may be required. The difficulty with drilling is the drill not being centered as well as the drill wandering while going through, that's one of my reasons for drilling from both ends. If you have to beat on the pin, you risk deforming the fender at the hinge.

It has to come out. No other

It has to come out. No other way to paint the fender and be clean about it.

It has a head on one end. It is not welded or staked....just stuck. I put the pin in myself 22 years ago.

The winner

The winner is Bstratton. I heated it up until the infrared thermomemeter read over 600 degrees. It popped out rather easily. The issue was that the pin was slightly bent, plus thick paint and primer on the inside diameter.

Glad you got it out

getting it back together without chipping the paint is the tough part. You will need to file some of the paint off the hinge edges with a very fine file - like emery board. And run a wire brush through the hinges.
