R51/3: Felt washer inside rear drive

Hi all. Further to this – http://www.vintagebmw.org/v7/node/15303

Would it be correct to state that the felt washer I bought with all the other washers, bearings and so – is useless in this case?
Or am I missing something?
Why is this felt washer there for?
