Side Stand

Post by waldoverkill »

Hi bstratton

Can I ask where you purchased your stand from?

I just installed a new stock sidestand. It came with a new pivot pin that screws into the frame. The pin has a smaller pin that extends off the end of the pivot pin. That extension causes the spring to be pushed out when the stand is deployed, which keeps it from detenting down, which turns it into a self retracting stand. took about 30 minutes to install and most of that time was spent chasing the threads on the frame. I also had to reduce the diameter of the new pin a bit to make the stand pivot easily. that just took a little 600 sandpaper. I have not had much of a chance to use it yet but I am happy with it so far.

Sorry - Just saw this

Got it from MaxBMW in Portsmouth, NH. The kit includes the pivot pin, spring and stand. Don't remember what I paid for it. There are two sizes of pivot pins. You need to know the size of your threaded hole in the frame. If you have the old pin you can measure that.

Good luck

MaxBMW's website shows the cost at $249. Pin sizes are 12 and 14mm. They also have a side stand for frames without a pin hole...$299.

Post by Lincoln »

Stock sidestands often appear on EBay at more reasonable prices. Here's one:

But you may want instead to get an aftermarket one, such as the Brown sidestand, which costs more, and is offered by http://www.benchmarkworks.com/

I don't have one but am considering getting one. These or ones like them also appear on EBay, but they don't include the longer engine stud that Bench Mark includes and which you apparently need to make a proper installation. The stock stand leaves a lot to be desired. I for one can't deploy it while I'm sitting on the bike, which is what I'd most like to be able to do with it, to ease getting off.

all best, Lincoln

My friend has one on his 56 R69 that mounts in place of the front left motor mount spacer. No need for a different motor mount bolt. Just remove the front spacer. Seems pretty sturdy. He likes it. Don't know what they cost. MaxBMW gives me a break from their posted prices. I have spent enough there to finance the owners kids college education...
