I successfully managed to set the timing in my R50/2 yesterday. After my test ride I came home and attempted to shut the gas off. The Petcock has always been a little loose...it would spin slightly, but never leaked. I tried to tighten it by spinning it. This opened the flood gates (literally). The reverse threads confused me.
I'm going to take the Petcock off the tank today. Is there assembly instructions anywhere? How about a rebuild kit?...new gaskets, filter available?
Thanks,
1966 R50/2

Wow, can't say as I've seen that type before. I checked Duane's site and he doesn't have anything like that. Almost like someone took a petcock and added the outlets at the bottom to serve two carbs. I found something similar on the ebay...the ad indicated it was an R25 or R25/2 petcock...doesn't look like mine, though. Also see sites that suggest it might be for an R35 or pre WWII bike.
It looks like there's a "cover" that straddles the width of the petcock that wraps around the backside. I wonder if spreading that out will let the cover pop off the front. What does the opposite side of the petcock look like? It has to come apart...

Fast. Neat. Average. Friendly. Good. Good.
The correct petcock for a '66 would be the Everbest "bullet" style, of which there are usually dozens of on Ebay. There are also repops available and all can be had for under $75. Make sure you get the M20 FIP type.
If you buy a new one, get the Karcoma. The reproduction Everbest ones have a horribly stiff rubber seal that practically freezes after a few days. The Karcoma would be quite correct for a mid-sixties bike.
I called Vech and talked to Richard. Ordered a new Karcoma petcock. He said I may need to grind down the On-Off-Reserve lever, because its prone to rub when on the reserve position. Has anyone else had to do this? I have a 1966 R50/2.
Thanks in advance,

I have a Karcoma on my R69 that has been trouble-free for several years. I bought one of the new Everbests just for the originality but have hesitated to install it because of the complaints about the stiffness. I think that might be a problem on those rare occasions when I have to switch to reserve while underway.

When I replaced the petcock on my R51/3 with a karcoma the lever did hit the bottom of the tank,
2 seconds on the grinding wheel and a little emory cloth and all was good, not a big deal at all.
