R60/2 chrome air filter repair

Post by skychs »

1968 R60/2

The chrome air filter on my /2 is getting rusty and pitted. Obviously its chrome plated. Before it gets too bad Id like to fix it. Any suggestion on how to remove the chrome plating so I can return it to its original silver color? Blasting? Chemical? Sanding?
thanks
chuck

Sand and paint

Post by miller6997 »

Using wet-or-dry, I sanded, primed, and painted mine and it worked out well. Mine wasn't pitted, so I did not have to deal with imperfections in the surface. If you use a good sand-able primer it shouldn't be a problem.

Strip the chrome

Post by 540964 »

Any chrome plater can strip the chrome plate. There is an aluminum paint in a rattle can that is super close to the OE color, just prime and paint it. Duplicolor engine enamel 207 is super close to OE. It has near perfect flake finish. I used it for an early air cleaner.

Try Metal Rescue. It will remove all rust and leave the chrome (or paint) intact. Available at Home depot, etc. or on-line.

I think it looks pretty good.

I think it looks pretty good. Not sure if the original had that much shine. If you found other original ones, you could judge it better. It would be easy enough to knock the shine down if desired.

Looks Great!

Very nice re-do of the air cleaner. You can use spot putty and more primer layers to get rid of all the pitting, but yours looks better than most. Not sure what decal was originally on the non-69S air filter housing??

The Chrome one's, I also never liked them but I suppose if you go Full-Chrome like some sort of show bike it can be pretty.
