My new 1954 R51/3

Post by wa1nca »

Sitting idle since 1970
47 years
Stored always in shelter
Owner took it apart to restore some day
Always turned engine over several times a year to keep it free

Phase 1 is to get it running again

Tommy

Good luck with your project

Post by niall4473 »

Hi,
Good luck with your project, I wonder if you could do me a favour?
I am collecting parts to resurrect an R67/2 which my Dad dismantled in the 1960s, he wanted the engine to give my Mums R51/3 sidecar outfit a boost, and much of the rest of it got given away over the years.
I have about 95% of the parts now, the engine is ready and some of the sub-assemblies, however I have no rims on my hubs and I need an offset figure for building them up, BMW published figures to use in conjunction with (and to make) the wheel gauges, but they only give a figure to the edge of the rim, which is no use unless you know exactly how wide the original rims were, what I need is a measurement from a good datum, such as across the edge of the brake drum, to the centreline of the rim. If you should happen to take one of your wheels out for any reason if you could take a measurement, that would be great.
Also, does your front wheel sit dead centre between the fork legs?, because some seem to be very slightly offset towards the brake plate side, approx 0.5mm.
Thanks a lot.

No
A previous owner painted the headlight ,gas tank and fenders blue
I sort of like it and will drive it as is for now

Installing a leaking rear main seal today
Engine hopefully tomorrow

Will post more pic's as I go

I paid $500.00 for the bike
Was missing one rim and exhaust headers and mufflers

Already received a set of headers and mufflers from Antero from Mi
And a new rim from Jim in Ky
Thank you both
