Size of bolts on tripple tree top plate (Earles fork)

Post by schrader7032 »

I was looking at my top plate on the /2 and noticed that I have two different size metric bolts ..... one looks original and the other is obviously a replacement...it's not even chrome....or stainless ... funny thing is that the original looking bolt is slightly larger than the replacement.... this does not make any sense to me... why would the original bolt be larger than the hole for the replacement bolt...

The bolts are holding the top plate on the Earls Fork near where the handle bars attach... they use a 17mm end wrench to remove...

Could someone measure their original bolt and tell me the thread size and pitch....

Thanks

Joel

Confused!

Post by miller6997 »

My originals are 19mm. I've replaced them with the polished stainless versions (also 19mm) from Benchmark Works. If the holes and bolts on yours are different sizes, one side must have been tapped out, or else one side was welded and re-drilled and re-threaded. Either way, I agree that it is curious. Some PO must have stripped one of the holes.

I think you are correct.....

I think you are correct..... someone had to tap out one side to the next larger size.... guess I will have to figure out what that size is..drill and tap out the other then buy new stainless steel bolts to fit...so they look equal..

Polish the stainless?

I've had good luck polishing stainless so that it looks (almost) like chrome, if you want the original look.

Hi,

The correct thread is 10mm x 1.00 pitch.
