R51/3 Kickstart doesn't crank the engine

Post by johnstas617 »

I removed the kickstart lever to get it chromed, replaced the seal and the paper gasket there and now the kickstart only moves the transmission doesn't matter which gear i'm at.
What could be wrong there?
Thanks

Bushing

Post by VintageSalesandRestorations »

Hi,

The aluminum part that the paper gasket is under, and the seal is in, is the kickstart gear bushing / bearing.

If you remove that part, you can disrupt the ratchet mechanism that lives inside the large gear attached to the shaft that the kick lever is on.

I suspect that the aluminum bushing is interfering with the ratchet pawl in the gear.

Try tapping the end of the kick start shaft with a brass hammer - not too hard - or other somewhat soft metal.

That might free up the ratchet.

I see

It's funny you are saying this because I really had troubles fitting it back
The kickstart shaft wasn't 'centered' and I had to push it by hand when fitting the aluminum bushing

That was the result of over tightening the aluminum bushing..
Problem fixed! And the manual is on its way to me
