Welcome! Are you saying that when you begin to add throttle, the engine stutters and fails to run well? If so, it could be a number of things. Yes, timing is one thing. But you should be sure the valves are set properly. Also, something could be wrong with the carbs as in there might be an air leak between the carb and the head, the carbs might need cleaning or adjustments, or the carbs might need synching so that each side works in unison. Could also be that your throttle cable is not adjusted correctly.

I would look at the carburetors/fuel system first, make sure all is clean inside. Adjust valves, service ignition system,points/timing/condenser/spark plug,etc......see how it runs,if still having issue, then possible coil/serious carburetor fault, etc.

What a beautiful home...

...you have! I just love that Spanish or Spanish inspired design! Anyway, go buy yourself a can of starter fluid (which really is ether?) With the bike running on idle, spray the fluid on the carb flange-to-valve head gaskets. If the idle changes, then your flanges are warped, you running lean with more throttle, and we'll tell you what to do next...FWIW, and incidentially, an R67/3 is a really nice bike: much more sensible a machine than an R68?...if you don't want to spend the money on the starter fluid, see if the bike takes throttle better with the air filter choke closed...

Starter Fluid

Post by VintageSalesandRestorations »

Hi,

Please be VERY careful not to get any starter fluid into the intake when the motor is running. Spraying starter spray into a running engine is like putting dynamite in a fire. Can damage your motor badly via detonation.

I perform a similar test using WD40 or carb cleaner, which are both much safer.

Cheers.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I'm working on the carbs now. The timing seems ok.
I will try with carb. cleaner. I think is for check if the engine has an air intake in that gasket.

I have an other question. The serial number. 764253 is my serial number, but I can't find this numbers in any of serial number models list.
Can anybody check it ??
I have the same number on both engine and frame.

This website has a serial number search feature. Put your frame or engine number into one of the two fields at the top of the left sidebar under BMW Models and click Search. The number you give is for a 1942-44 R75, so there's something funny about it.

There was no official BMW spanish import when this bike was sold in Spain in 1955.
May be the problem is there.

Thanks a lot.

engine number

Post by VintageSalesandRestorations »

hi,

That engine number was stamped in by hand - and not by BMW.

it was done later by a previous owner - these are not the original numbers...
