EMPI Carb Synchronizer(s)

Post by stagewex »

So is this the tool that most folks like and use for their Bing carbs. This would be for a 1969 r60/2. Expensive little buggers since it looks like the price is for one but you need two of them.

Looks like I can't use my TwinMax or even my Harmonizer on these types of carbs. Too bad.

That's them. They were cheaper 3-4 years ago...I think I got my set for around $80. There is a mod that can be made to the carb that would allow you to use a TwinMax. I believe Bing even sells a kit for it.

Yes you can use your Twinmax testers by installing a tube in both carb bodys. http://www.barringtonmotorworks.com/gal ... d=2&gid=26 Barrington sells them. I like this set up because you don't have to hold the testers with your hands and
you will get a trusted seal. Mark

I don't have to hold my EMPI

Post by schrader7032 »

I don't have to hold my EMPI testers with my hands. The rubber seal around the connector fits well on my R69S carbs. While the conversion to use a TwinMax would be the best, it clearly is a critical modification as it makes a permanent change to the carb...and for me, an excellent opportunity to screw it up and trash a carb. The EMPI leaves no marks.

If one was starting with no TwinMax or no EMPI, the cost is generally going to be a push...you just have to take the extra step of modifying the carbs. I used my EMPI gages to help someone on his R51/3, so it was useful in that sense.

Personal choice...I just wasn't comfortable making the permanent change to the carb.

Question ?

Post by capebretonmarkbmw »

I did not know that they fit firmly on the carb snugly! Can you position the gauges so you can read them while revving the engine?
The installation of the tube on the carb's requires a bit of skill and the correct tap. The pewter can take the drilling but you do have to remove the bur and fillings. I have done this and they have not given me any problems to date. mark

Yes, the gage part can easily be turned but in its normal position, it's easily viewable from looking straight down on them. The cone shaped part in the first post link is what secures the setup to the carb inlet. If the carb inlet is too small, then it won't fit well.

Jeff Dean posted a picture of the gages installed:

I ended up ordering the EMPI (2 of them of course). For the same reasons stated I really didn't want to modify anything to use the TwinMax.

What is the advantage of the EMPI gauge over the Uni-Syn? For some reason Uni-Syns are cheap on Ebay compared to EMPI. I've used Uni-Syns for years, never tried an EMPI.

EMPI: Getting ready to use the first time

Post by stagewex »

Funny I didn't see any youtube or other video specific to a BMW /2. But there are enough based on VW bugs.
If anyone wants to add anything that might be helpful it would sure be appreciated. Like a step-by-step on a /2.

I'm going to use this weekend using the old "shorting out one side at a time" & "ear" method (with someone more experienced). Then use these EMPI's to see how close I got.

Loosen the throttle cable

Post by 808Airhead »

Loosen the throttle cable adjusters when synching the idle, adjust the engine when warm. You have a small window to adjust before the engine can overheat at idle so work quickly. After the idle synch is done, leave approx. 1mm of freeplay at the cable adjusters and synch the throttle cables, just as you crack the throttle watch the synch tools so you can synch the initial cable adjustment as the carbs just crack open. DO NOT BLIP the throttle with these attached it will BREAK the synch tool! Ask me how I know! Only open the throttle gradually. After the cable synch at
off idle" open the throttle a little more and watch the synch, this will be the "cruise" adjustment, this is more critical to be in synch than the "just off idle",you want the vacuum readings to be similar with the throttle open around 1/5- 1/4 throttle (abuot 9-10 on the synch meters).
