R69s crank - long conrod Vs shorter conrod

Post by malmac »

I see there is two versions of the R69s crankshaft - one with long conrods and the other with shorter conrods.

However in my parts manual I see only one R69s crankshaft complete part number - 11 21 0016066

If I assumed then that there are two different sorts of pistons - with different locations for the piston pin - would that be correct?

Could anyone throw some light on this matter for me?

Thanks in advance.

RealOEM shows only one part

Post by schrader7032 »

RealOEM shows only one part number for connecting rod and pistion. Phil Hawksley's website only shows one stroke length - 73mm. Benchmark Works has two listings for rods and pistons for the R69S:

-- 54.5mm crank pins with a B17L pin
-- 53mm crank pins with a B17 pin

All that is over my head. But check his website.

Thank you for your input. It can be a bit like pulling teeth to get all the info one needs to maintain various aspects of our bikes.

I want to get a crankshaft for my R69s, so when I pull it down I can shorten up the time taken to get it all back on the road.

Thanks again.

Ulis motoradladden (sp?) has BRAND NEW R69s crankshafts for sale. Around $1500.00 . If I were to do a rebuild on that R69s,$1500.00 is a great price for a new crank.

Why do I see long conrod sets

Post by malmac »

Why do I see long conrod sets for late model R69s?

But I do not see different pistons ( one to suit long and one to suit normal conrod length??

Does anyone know the way of telling which motors have which conrods?

Thanks in advance

Pistons maybe the same

Post by Twocams »

For both conrod lengths but the cylinders maybe longer. Or the head different to accommodate the rod length. Sounds good in theory anyway.

I asked Ulis about the crankshaft - it is not the conrod that is longer but the crankpin. The webs are fatter on some cranks and they require a longer crank pin.
Conrods still the same length.

crankshaft has arrived today

well I bit the bullet and purchased a new crank from Ulis - which arrived today.

So finally have decided to rebuild the major bits from the crank up.
New bearings, seals, pistons and what ever else needs to be done so the old girl runs well.

I don't think that is anywhere near outragious in price

$1500 for a New crankshaft.... that is a good price... I have no idea what it costs to rebuild one, but I imagine it has to he at least half that amount, and this way you get new, perfect and true.... I understand that one of the problems with old crankshafts is that they have some movement in the pins... so that they are not truly alligned.
Several years ago I had a bike with soft heads (butterheads) and I ordered a brand new pair of R69S heads... beautiful, expensive but I got what I wanted.... they are better metal than the originals, a beautiful casting and perfect.....money well spent.

I am working with a man who is an alcoholic, trying to put his life back together... I think of the money he must have spent to ruin himself, (just because he didn't have a R69S to keep him broke, but busy)... seriously, I think we are so much luckier we all' have a great hobby that keeps our minds and hands busy...(it takes much more than that) this is a fine hobby and I really enjoy working with my friends.

Thank You

We will see how the engine goes when completed, however I am optimistic.

I agree re being lucky to have such a great hobby/passion. I have two R69s bikes - one is just 1001 parts but will go back together over time.

The other is a going concern, but I want to improve the engine so it runs without the clatter and rattles.
