R51 fuel petcock

My 1939 R51 fuel petcock bowl doesn't seem to have a filter in the bowl it like most seem to. Nor does it seem to have two holes to/from the bowl from the petcock body (one to feed each side of a filter) like some I've seen - it only has one hole in the petcock that flows into the bowl.
Surely if it has a bowl is should have a filter or is it just there to catch heavier particles or 'leak-by' when the fuel tap is off?
Regards,
John
