Las Vegas Auctions - January 2015
Bonham's will be at Bally's Hotel and Casino on Thursday, January 8th. They have almost no lots posted yet. Bonham's auctions are usually free to watch. Info here: http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22125/
Meecum (formerly MidAmerica) will again be at the South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall, Thursday-Saturday, January 8-10. The Thursday auction doesn't begin until 4pm, so there should be plenty of time to see the Bonham's auction first. There are a lot of BMWs already listed, including an R47, an R16 and two R62s!

Looks like Bonham's finally
The R47 sure is pretty. I can't recall having seen an auxiliary tank with that kind of shape before.
I have made my reservations and will be there to take in the show. If you want to have me look at a bike, let me know. For someone serious about bidding I can probably take photos and send them to you.

Fun time, interesting results
- The bike offered as an R71 was in reality an R61. It sold for only $20k, but while the frame and drivetrain all looked original and had nice numbers, there were a variety of Russian parts decorating it and it was missing the steel shields over the lower half of the cylinder heads.
- There were two R62s, one was a "rider" and one nicely done up. The "rider" sold for $39k, while the other one bid up to $45k but didn't reach its reserve.
- The piece d'resistance was a beautiful, and perhaps a bit over the top, R47, which sold for $80k. Although everything was detailed to a T, there were a few odd things, like the cotter pin on the front of the motor holding the eccentric timing idler gear shaft in position (vs. the unobtrusive tapered pin BMW originally used) and the odd, not at all period, tail pipes.
- Actually, the real piece d'resistance was the 1927 R39. When did you ever see one in real life? This was also beautifully restored, and it very quickly bid up to $100k, but the bidding closed as it wasn't even close to its reserve.
- The other Antique era BMW on offer was a 1931 R16. Bidding only went to $40k, which was not close to the reserve. But perhaps the bidders who might have been interested noticed that the frame didn't seem to have any numbers and also seemed to be from an R12...
Lots of nice eye
I was a bit jazzed to be within polite speaking distance of Wayne Carini while he meandered solo without his cameraman and production assistant at the Bonhams event on Thursday. I didn't engage him, but afterward thought that I should've told him that I'd like to see a "Chasing Classic Cars" corollary that highlights the tracking/purchase/maintenance of beautiful vehicles that have really been used for significant mileages, but that remain nice examples of their type. Anyone with a big enough wallet can snag a low-mile museum piece; the more interesting stories to me would be those of dedicated long-term owners who make real use of beautiful machinery, but keep them gleaming over time, even as manufacturer support diminishes or evaporates.
