Las Vegas Auctions - January 2015

Post by Darryl.Richman »

Anybody going?

Bonham's will be at Bally's Hotel and Casino on Thursday, January 8th. They have almost no lots posted yet. Bonham's auctions are usually free to watch. Info here: http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22125/

Meecum (formerly MidAmerica) will again be at the South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall, Thursday-Saturday, January 8-10. The Thursday auction doesn't begin until 4pm, so there should be plenty of time to see the Bonham's auction first. There are a lot of BMWs already listed, including an R47, an R16 and two R62s!

Looks like Bonham's finally

Post by Darryl.Richman »

Looks like Bonham's finally put up their lots. Disappointing for BMW enthusiasts, only a 1984 R100RT police model and an R60/2.

The R47 sure is pretty. I can't recall having seen an auxiliary tank with that kind of shape before.

I have made my reservations and will be there to take in the show. If you want to have me look at a bike, let me know. For someone serious about bidding I can probably take photos and send them to you.

Choose a time!

There's going to be a Cannonball reunion dinner on Friday evening, so I will be busy then, but pick any other time and we can get together!

VBMWMO Forum and Slash 2 List Meet Up

Post by Darryl.Richman »

Just chatted with Jeff Moore (VintageSalesAndRestoration here). We're going to get together for a drink and chat at the bar outside of the Silverado Steakhouse at the South Point Hotel (where the Meecum auction is being held) at 8pm on Thursday. If you're going to be at the auction, why not drop by and join us?

Fun time, interesting results

Post by Darryl.Richman »

We had a small but fun meeting on Thursday evening. We talked about what everyone was up to and the bikes for sale. During the get together and over the course of the 3 days of auction, I got to see forum participants Jeff Moore (VintageSalesAndRestorations) and Chris Aker (Caker) along with Brent Hansen (Brent's Motor Works), Tim Stafford (Tim Stafford Restorations), Evan Bell (Irv Seaver BMW), John Landstrom (Blue Moon Cycle), Mike Brown (Brown Motor Works), and probably some others -- and I apologize in advance here -- that have slipped my mind.
  • The bike offered as an R71 was in reality an R61. It sold for only $20k, but while the frame and drivetrain all looked original and had nice numbers, there were a variety of Russian parts decorating it and it was missing the steel shields over the lower half of the cylinder heads.
  • There were two R62s, one was a "rider" and one nicely done up. The "rider" sold for $39k, while the other one bid up to $45k but didn't reach its reserve.
  • The piece d'resistance was a beautiful, and perhaps a bit over the top, R47, which sold for $80k. Although everything was detailed to a T, there were a few odd things, like the cotter pin on the front of the motor holding the eccentric timing idler gear shaft in position (vs. the unobtrusive tapered pin BMW originally used) and the odd, not at all period, tail pipes.
  • Actually, the real piece d'resistance was the 1927 R39. When did you ever see one in real life? This was also beautifully restored, and it very quickly bid up to $100k, but the bidding closed as it wasn't even close to its reserve.
  • The other Antique era BMW on offer was a 1931 R16. Bidding only went to $40k, which was not close to the reserve. But perhaps the bidders who might have been interested noticed that the frame didn't seem to have any numbers and also seemed to be from an R12...
There were also a smattering of /2 era bikes, mostly R60s. They brought prices that were definitely in line with their condition, from $16,000 at the top end down to $4,250. The same was true for the Airheads that went up for sale. A nicely turned out 1975 Silver Smoke R90S sold for $12k, and maybe the biggest surprise was a 1980 R65 cafe custom, which brought $16,500. OTOH, an original Butler & Smith R75 racer, with an aluminum tank and dustbin fairing, fabricated by Udo Gietl and raced by Reg Pridmore, did not meet reserve at $25k.

Lots of nice eye

Post by khittner »

Lots of nice eye candy/mechanical art on display, and both the Bonhams and Mecum auctions were fun events to watch. But the collector ethos remains a bit of a mystery to me---I don't understand the pleasure of merely possessing a device (often among dozens or hundreds of other similar devices) that frequently isn't used at all for its intended purpose, and that the owner doesn't intend to/can't really achieve a reasonable mastery of. Consumerism as an end of its own seems kind of sad.

I was a bit jazzed to be within polite speaking distance of Wayne Carini while he meandered solo without his cameraman and production assistant at the Bonhams event on Thursday. I didn't engage him, but afterward thought that I should've told him that I'd like to see a "Chasing Classic Cars" corollary that highlights the tracking/purchase/maintenance of beautiful vehicles that have really been used for significant mileages, but that remain nice examples of their type. Anyone with a big enough wallet can snag a low-mile museum piece; the more interesting stories to me would be those of dedicated long-term owners who make real use of beautiful machinery, but keep them gleaming over time, even as manufacturer support diminishes or evaporates.
