Seeking wisdom on inserting new valve guides

Post by malmac »

Well I haven't done this before, so if anyone has some good advice on what to do or not to do it would be appreciated. Attached is the drift I made to tap the new guides home.

These guides need to have their clips installed prior to installation.

There are several important factors: The bore for the guide must be clean and undamaged. The guide needs to be the correct size to give a .002" interference fit. The head needs to be heated to 500°F. Lubricate the outside of the guide and insert it quickly; if everything is right, there'll be no need for hammering. Be prepared to knock the guide back out if it doesn't go in willingly.
