Replacement gauge cluster advice needed

Post by JakeF »

My gauge cluster is shot. I can get a working one off a 1978 R80. It looks the same. Is it the same part as on a 1976 R90S? Would there be any problems with it working?

When I look up the parts on BobsBMW site the part numbers are different for the two bikes but the schematics and pictures are identical.

So the gages are shot or is

Post by schrader7032 »

So the gages are shot or is it just the central lights that aren't working? There is an LED replacement for the plastic bridge that holds the lights.

As for differences, the '76 has a mechanical tach drive while the '78 has an electronic tach. What about getting things repaired? Terry Vrla is an independent rebuilder of speedometers...probably tachs as well. Other choices would be places like Overseas Speedometer, North Hollywood Speedometer, and Palo Alto Speedometer.

Got it figured out

Post by JakeF »

After posting I called a local guy who knows the R90S inside and out. The ratio of the gauge cluster I was looking at is wrong. He said he has a working unit that he can sell me or help me figure out if my current cluster is worth going through. At least I now know that the cluster I have is the correct one for the bike. The person who sold me the bike (it was non-op and a mess) told me it came off a different bike and I was concerned it might not be the correct unit but it is. I have already got an overhaul of it priced by Palo Alto Speedometer.
