Help with pricing a Box find

Post by skychs »

Yesterday I went to see a 1975 R90S that was totally disassembled and in boxes. All the parts are there, mostly original and in fair shape. The engine and Tranny need to be rebuilt. 60K on the odometer. Matching numbers. Has a title. All the body work is there .... typical patina for its age. The inside of the tank looked very good. The frame, subframe and swing arm have been painted and look good.
The wheels look ok but need new spokes .... new spokes were included.

He is asking around 3K for everything. Said he was flexible on the price a little. I may be able to get it for around $2500.

Im guessing around 3K to clean up and rebuild the engine and tranny. The rebuild with all new seals, bearings etc etc etc around 2K. That puts me around $7500 without a paint job which is another $3500.

Am I missing anything? Is $2500 a fair price? Any input pos or neg?
Thanks
chuck

I'm not sure one can work

Post by schrader7032 »

I'm not sure one can work always backwards from a standard street price by knocking off how much it costs to do X, Y, or Z...in some cases, as you've just done, he would have to pay you to haul the boxes away.

There's a street price and then there's "ugh" factor of having to do all that work to resurrect the bike from all it's parts. No telling what was wrong with the bike before it was disassembled. I suppose a price of $5000 could get a lower quality but running R90S. With that in mind, $2500 seems too high in my mind. I would think $1500-2000 would be easier to swallow.

That said, the bike should be pulled back from the ashes. We need to save as many of these as we can. You sir, should take on that mantle and go forward and do good!!

R90S

Post by skychs »

Thanks Kurt .....
Having already restored one R90S I have a great understanding of what it needs. It was a running bike so maybe I had it easy. This one may be more of the "ugh" factor you described.

The only mystery to me would be the engine and tranny. I have absolutely NO, nun, zip experience rebuilding/restoring an engine. The rest I can do.

As much as I would like to tackle this project I think you are correct ..... $2500 is too much for all the unknown. Maybe I can get him down a little more. I will keep you posted.

R90s

Sounds like a fair price. In the big picture $500 more $2500 versus $2000 is not a big deal if you want it. And as thing go in 5 years $2500 may even look like a great buy.

You guys are great!! An R90S for $2500? What a deal. I know it’s a good deal. I just have to convince the wife it’s a good deal. Unfortunately she rolled her eyes at me when I mentioned it. Let me see what I can do.

R90S restoration

Post by JakeF »

I too bought a non-op R90S, but not disassembled. The engine fired and there was no smoke. The bike had plenty of "patina". It is now running and road safe but has a number of items still to be addressed. If you are doing all of the wrenching yourself it will save you a lot but all of those little parts definitely add up. If you love restoring bikes go for it, but I wouldn't pay more than $2k. I paid $4k for mine and now know I overpaid a bit. If you aren't going to do the heavy work yourself be prepared to open your wallet, otherwise get one that has been well cared for by its previous owner. If I had to do it over again that is what I would do. The good part is I breathed new life back into the bike. It is a ton of fun to ride!

Got it

Here it is ..... literally a R90S in a box. It has been sitting in this guys garage for 20 years in boxes. A heated section of his garage. The only thing we couldn't find were two push rods.
