Original paint colour?

Post by Wenzelator »

Hello all....
So just purchased myself a 10/74 R90S that is currently painted a pretty poor attempt at silver smoke!
My intent is to get it repainted back to what is was originally.
The question is, is there anyway to find out what the original colour was? DO or SS?
Not sure of the bikes complete history. If anyone has some info I'm all ears!
Chassis number is 4080720.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

If yours is a '74 model (/5

Post by khittner »

If yours is a '74 model (/5 switchgear, solid brake discs, aluminum turn signals), they were only painted in silver smoke. Daytona Orange was only a '75 and '76 color option. There may be a method for determining your bike's original color if it's a '75 model based on build date and serial number, but one of the real experts will have to clue us both in.

Wouldn't a 10/74 build bike

Post by schrader7032 »

Wouldn't a 10/74 build bike be a '75 model? Certainly seeing some pictures would help.

1975 Model Year

It consistently has all the '75 MY features: ribbed seat cover, plastic turn signal bodies, drilled brake rotors, later switch gear. You can send your frame number to BMW's archives, perhaps they can tell you what color it was when it left the factory.

It's your bike.... paint it what you want...

Post by jrapose »

You are the only one matters..... there are tons of bikes at shows that are true garage queens... and will beat your restoration every time in a show... thats the only time they see daylight...they are never ridden and unless you are willing to spend crazy money restoring something worth half of what you have in it... forget restoring it for show....(notice the only bikes that always win at shows are all not done by the owner but some real professional) Forget everyone else....do it your way.... restore it for you.... ride to enjoy the bike...not the big ole trophy ....

Just my $ .02 ..... I really like my ole R69S....and it would show well, but never come close to wining any shows...because I RIDE IT..

Khittner, so true! I do like

Khittner, so true! I do like the Daytona Orange!
My only thinking is that if I am to spend the $2000 to get it painted I'd be silly not to get it done in the correct colour?

Jrapose, yes I understand. I have no intentions of 'showing' this bike as it will get ridden.
Club runs and social rides have more appeal to me.

Thanks again.

color R90s

Post by ben.germanauto »

I went through the same thing . I don't think there is a way to find out at the 75 / 76 models. They came with a color sticker under the seat , but that is most likely gone after the years.
I tried to go through frame numbers or vin numbers and was not able to find the original color .
Let me know if you find a way.
I have a feeling in a few years we will have 90% DO bikes in 75 and 76.
