I have recently gotten the 1971 r75/5, how can you tell if it is a long or short wheel base model ?

Welcome to the forum!! A 1971 model is almost certainly a short wheelbase bike. The longer wheelbase, by about 50mm, came into the production during the middle of the 1973 model year. So, if your drive shaft and rear end haven't been changed, it's a SWB. Some good info here:

I think 75/5 up to frame 2 997 986 were SWB, 60/5 to 2 947 966 and 50/5 to 2 906 304.
