No, but do tell about it. The trans case on my R52 leaks like a sieve.

Glyptal?

Bruce -

I'd never heard of this but found a few links/forums where people discuss this exact issue of porosity. Search for glyptal on these pages:

Glyptal?

A year ot 2 ago, Euro Iron implied that any decent engine rebuilder would do this to old aluminum engines but he would never give any details.

I think some of the Porsche crowd does it, too.

I think I will put this on some of the other groups to see what the response is.

The V-twin forum gives a lot of good examples of why we should stay with BMW!

Here's a link to Glyptal over at Eastwood Co.:

This might work for my transmission, but I note that its operating range is limited to 250F, and I would worry about that in a motor application.

Also, it does not say that it is gasoline resistant.

Forget about Glyptal. It does NOT work for our application. The best is Plastikote Red Insulating Varnish. It seals and will not come off. I learned this from a highly qualified mechanic and engine rebuilder and haver used it on all my bikes with great success. Call my machinist /rebuilder Russ Bender at 1-819-684-5434 for the whole story or verification of this.

Has anyone used Glyptal to seal the inside of their porous old aluminum engine/transmission cases?
