R/60 headlight

Post by Darryl.Richman »

The lens should be available at your local BMW dealer. Or you could try Bench Mark Works, Capital Cycle or The Parts Haus.

As to why it fell out -- it shouldn't do that. The headlight assembly goes over a fold in the top part of the lip on the headlight bucket, and a piece of spring steel holds a button tight at the bottom. It should fit very snug, you should need to pry them apart at the bottom.

The headlight assembly is made up of a chrome ring, into which a rubber strip, glass lens, and reflector fit, and which are clipped in place with 6 spring clips that look like partly unbent paper clips. The bulb is a standard H4 12V dual filament 55/60W halogen bulb available at any auto parts store.

I hope this helps!

Exactly, I thought AutoZone would have the lamp, but he looked at me like I was crazy for bringing a motorcycle part in there. I guess he saw the chrome plastic ring that I kept attached to the lamp and he didn't know what to do with it. I will try the dealership Monday, hopefully they won't charge an arm and a leg for a headlamp. The bulb still works, but you can't just replace the lens right?

Go to the parts fiche on the Max BMW website and click on "Lighting" and then "Headlamp", you should see how your headlight goes together. All of the pieces are available separately.

I believe that the actual H4 bulb (#20 in the drawing) is held into the reflector (#5) with a small wire bail. Undoing the bail should release the bulb.

Never handle the bulb by the glass. The oil on your skin will cause a hot spot and the bulb will fail again soon.

I'm still not completely clear on what parts you need, but if it's the 7" glass disk (#3), you can get that at the dealer or from one of the specialists. If you need the bulb, that should be available at any auto parts store.

Thanks for your help! I took the remaining pieces of the lens out and the gasket looks bad too. I will go by the dealership tomorrow and get the lens and a new gasket. The lens appeared to be formed into the gasket. Do I do just like any other gasket and put it behind the lens and put the assembly back together or is there a trick to putting the lens in the gasket? I looked in the Clymer manual, but it just showed how it goes together. Thanks again.

I believe the gasket is just sandwiched between the lens and the reflector; it's just supposed to keep dust and moisture out.

When you get it back together, check out how it mounts on the bucket. Find out why it came off, so it doesn't happen again. This should be a very reliable mounting system. I've put a couple hundred thousand miles on similar bikes and never had the headlight come off the bucket (when I didn't want it to ;-) ).

Good luck!

Hey everyone, I just purchashed a 1974 BMW R60/6 yesterday and I was cruising around today when the headlamp fell out and busted. The light still works but the glass broke out. I've been to all kinds of bike shops and cannot find this halogen light. Where in the world do I find it? Thanks!
