Paint the inside of your headlamp bucket white.

I am sure I learned this from a BMW owner as I first did this on my R69. Painting the inside of the bucket provides great visibility when fault finding on a dark road with a weak flashlight. The clarity of reflection and easy identification of colored wires is very helpful. The picture below is of my Norton Commando restoration but you get the idea. I do this on all of my motorcycles now.

I did this to my first bmw , an R90SRS back in 1980.
all my bikes have 2x coats of FLAT WHITE paint .
AS well as labeling my wires. while you're in there, I'll suggest that you add 1-2-3 extra spade ends and a separate ground wire back thru the harness and to your frame. a #16 or better a #14 BROWN wire
