/2 piston ring compressor

Post by huntmiller »

Looking for recommendation for a good ring /2 piston ring compressor. Most nice sets I have run across start at 73mm which is one mm to much for a 600cc piston. I have one that is a very wide metal band with a ratchet. I don't like it.

A friend and ran into this problem on his R60/2 some time ago. We got some suggestions here:

These work pretty well and are available in several different diameters.

Scott,
Interesting... Have you used them and will they cover all three rings?

Hey, if you're still looking for a ring compressor, here's what I did:
Start with a plastic bottle with an inner diameter that can accommodate the piston (I used a vitamin bottle). Cut off the top and bottom so you have a cylinder. Cut a slightly wedge shaped piece out of the cylinder and duct tape it back together so that you now have a tapered cylinder where one end is the diameter of just the cylinder and the other end is the uncompressed diameter of the piston rings.
Now all you have to do is push the piston through from the big end and, voila, ring compression. Because it's plastic you don't risk scratching the piston or rings. Remove the tape to get the thing off your conrod.
Takes just a couple minutes. Just remember to look for a good bottle before recycling day ;)
