Static Timing a Points Equipped Engine

Post by kirkpatrick3890 »

Disconnect battery!, remove horn if necessary and front cover.
Attach allen wrench on alternator bolt so the engine can be turned over.
Adjust points gap using the screw on right (from the front).
Attach test light to bare wire on condenser and ground clip on engine.
Loosen the two screws on the left side of the engine (from the front) that keep the timing from changing.
Rotate engine and adjust the timing so that the light just comes on when the – mark comes into the timing window. This is just after the S.
Voila, done!

Only thing I'd add is to remove the spark plugs. That makes the engine so much easier to turn with the allen bolt. There is a possibility of stripping the allen bolt when trying to turn the engine over against the compression of the cylinders.
