Re: Denfeld vs Pagusa?

My understanding is, (I could be wrong, I never worked for Butler & Smith) that all the 1955 - 1969 bikes exported to the USA came with (ugly, in my opinion) bench seats. Solo seats were offered as an accessory by Butler & Smith, but they were Denfeld seats, not Pagusa. In Europe, the bikes ...

Re: R51/3 air cleaner element

You can remove the screen, and remove the old, deteriorating filter medium, and replace it with modern foam filter material cut to fit. I have done this when there was no other choice. BUT do not overdo it. You are going to have to READ the spark plugs after you do so. If you overpack the filter wit...

Re: 1965 R50/2 TURN SIGNALS

Rather than filing off the square boss on the bar end signal, all you have to do is mark the handlebar as to where the "notch" has to be, (top on one side, bottom on the other) and using a Dremel mototool, with a cut off wheel, you can cut two slots in the bar, and then clamp a pair of vis...

Re: R69s Bings

Yes, carb bodies can and do warp and get distorted. Check the flange to see if it is warped from being over-tightened, and left that way for a long long time. If the flange is warped, it may/will have a vacuum leak. Check for a vacuum leak. Which will make that cylinder run HOT. which will make the ...

Re: Fuel

Do NOT use ethanol fuels, except when you are are out of gas and have no choice. Then drain it out when you get home and put it in your modern car. Any machine with a carburetor (including our motorcycles) will develop carb problems. Ethanol LOVES water. It will even draw and combine with water vapo...

Re: Force relations question: push rod, spring and rocker arm:

The push rods are the weakest component in the valve train of a a stock 1951 - 1969 twin. In the 40 + years that worked on bikes, it was a fairly common failure. Once they bend, they are done, and must be replaced. A bent push rod is a source of valve train noise. Once they are bent, they will bend ...

Re: Timing advance correcting the problem

Because no one ever bothers to clean and lubricate the pivot hole and post that the advance weights are mounted on, the hole in the weights and the shaft of the post wear, and that alone will cause the timing to go past the "F" mark, when revved up. The simplest cure, if you have the advan...

Re: Easy Clutch

The easy clutch was designed for use on primarily the /6 bikes. They had the most difficult clutch pull, particularly the R90S. Back in the '70s, when my R90S was new, and I rode it everyday, it would break the clutch cable about once a year. Riding the thing in city traffic would make your left han...

Re: Throtle-slide needle reposition = more speed?

Having worked on these bikes for over 40 years, my experience has been that 98% of the 1951 - 1969 BMW's solo bikes run the best with the needle in the 2nd position DOWN from the top. Only rarely did one require the 3rd down from the top to not stumble when accelerating from a standing start. As I h...
