Re: Restoring #163

None of the bikes had changes to the clutch cable set up. The stock set up works ok, except it's sort of a long pull. There is a guy who now makes a 2 to 1 set up using a tiny chain. We have on of those on our R90s that I like. I can't really see much in that pic, I can only assume that if its diffe...

Re: Restoring #163

I actually took a pic of this, but only on the top side. The underside has recesses for o-rings as well as on the case side which it looks like you have done. This was actually a leak point on the rebuild, the machined surface on the case was just not flat enough. We found this out when we put the e...

Re: Restoring #163

Well I didn't want to leave you hanging too long.... A few months had gone by along with, I assume, many phone calls and emails between BMW and the then owner of #163. The end result was that by the fall of 2016 the bike was purchased by (I think) BMW. My dad was also contracted to do the restoratio...

Restoring #163

I decided to start another thread and share my part in the restoration of the 1976 AMA Superbike championship bike #163. The story of the restoration of the #83 bike is well documented with many photos available on the internet. Last I knew, it resides in the BMW factory in Germany for all to see. W...

Re: Rebuilding an F750

The aluminum tank modifications to cut the bottom off are finished. There were many small corrosion pit holes that needed welding. I spent several hours cleaning up the welds and sanding the whole thing to 400 grit. Next I' need to fill it with water to see if there are any leaks. If there are I'll ...

Re: Rebuilding an F750

After my wife and I collected the frames and other bits from Reggie this summer we headed to my dads to "drop the stuff off". Upon our arrival my dad asked, "What are you going to do with this stuff, make a coffee table or do you really want to build a bike?" I knew this was not ...

Re: Rebuilding an F750

Some background on how this project got started. My dad had a life long friendship with Todd that started with the building of the original Butler & Smith BMW race bikes and continued through their work at Team Honda in California. I met Todd when I was around 5 years old (50 years ago), my memo...

Rebuilding an F750

Greetings, I thought it would be interesting to start off this section with a photo of the first US F750 built by my father. Over the next few months, the pics I will be posting are from a current project that represent the realization of a childhood dream. It all started a few months ago when we ca...
