Re: Offset Footrests on 1967 R60/2

It wouldbe very un-usual though if the mounts on the frame are offset as you describe, as they go on the same engine bolt.

Re: Early pre /2 “sports” gearing?

The wide-ratio gearbox was standard, close-ratio was an option. Although the wide ratio box is nowadays though of as purely for sidecar work, it was not always so. Our friends in North America may not be aware of just what a high proportion of BMWs were sold to fleet buyers, particularly pre-1960, m...

Re: Engine slows

Yes, it does sound as though it might be dragging, easy to test, with the engine stopped and G/B in neutral, put a foot on the kickstart and find compression, pull the clutch lever and the kickstart pedal should go down with no resistance whatsoever, if it does not, it isn't freeing off, before pull...

Re: Engine slows

With the motor stopped and the bike in neutral, does the clutch free off, i.e does the kick-start go free when the clutch is operated? Does it do this in neutral or in gear, or both? Does the bike try to lurch forward?

Re: Only modern tires from now on....

Better get them now, I don't know if production is transferring somewhere else, but if so, they will not be quite the same, they never are. https://www.classicracer.com/farewell-to-avon-tyres-factory-closes-its-doors-after-112-years/#:~:text=It's%20a%20sad%20thing%2C%20but,for%20four%2Dwheelers%20an...

Re: Who is your go-to parts supplier?

Personally, I use Motorworks in Yorkshire where possible to avoid the import duty, where I can't, I use Salis (NL), Ulis and Meyer (both D), all are first rate.

Re: EARLES VS US FORK

The Earles fork was dropped for a few reasons, it was expensive to make, quite heavy, and it's main advantages were for sidecar work, where it absolutely excels. Sidecars were rapidly disappearing with the advent of cheaper cars in Europe, fleet buyers wanted something cheaper and the whole series w...

Re: OLD MAN SLINGER RANT!!

The detergent in the oil is to stop the small particles of solids flocculating, so that they will stay in suspension until caught in the very effective filters which modern engines have, so naturally when those agents encounter aggregates of sludge, they will set about dissolving them. Old, straight...

Re: OLD MAN SLINGER RANT!!

I think a major factor here is the length of time in which an engine has been inactive, most motors in those days had some kind of centrifugal sludge trap,( I am thinking of British and other European here), ant they worked ok for the most part. What can happen, though, is that somebody gets a time-...

Re: restoration advice for newbie

I wouldn't restore it, do an M&E rebuild, just clean, polish and T.Cut the rest, you might be surprised, they are only original once, and there aren't many left now.
