A Singular Bulletin-The R 27 mystique

In about 2008 I was at Craig Vechorik's Benchmark Works and managed to ride the R-27s of both Richard Scheckler and Kevin Reimer. They were both peppy bikes and I still remember both rides. Kevin had replaced the stock carb with a Bing from an R 50. Kevin's R 27 made a memorable ride from Tallahasse...

Re: Replacing front fork springs

Interesting commentary on Mobil 1 multigrade fork oil.
I wonder if synthetic fork oil is offered-as I have not seen it.
Think I will have a long chat with Vech on this subject.

R 90 S Forks

Let us know how it turns out. My 1975 bike needs the same treatment plus
head bearing re-packing/adjustment. A stronger Toaster Tan upper brace/tree is also a thought.

Vech input

Craig Vechorik is 85 miles from this R-51, so managed to get his input. Vech Test on advance unit. The early advance unit on this bike has 9 and 11 weight coil return springs. His suggestion was to place a thumbnail between the points-THEN see if the fly weights snap back when they are extended. The...

Advance unit springs

I am still suspicious of the two " fly weight" springs, as they are called. A couple of reasons: The high idle could well be caused by weak spring action-which will not pull the advance weights back when spun on the cam nose. Thus: high idle continues. 1. The test done did not really retur...

Duane Auscherman...............

Auscherman has a similar test for the advance unit., involving the ignition key-slowly lifting 1/8 inch-watching the recovery and advance unit weights with a strobe light. They appear to be returning but-I am not absolutely certain-as the fast idle returns after the test-not supposed to happen. I wi...

Unusual high idle R-51/3

After a 15 mile ride, my 1951 R-51/3 developed a high non responsive idle: goes to about 3000 RPMs and stays there-checked cables for kink or mis-routing. Almost acting like stuck floats....... Thought about valve adjustment....but this is not symptomatic ...open for suggestions.... It COULD really ...

Del Ortos leaning out

This may be more than a cooler engine temperature seen just starting out within roughly a mile or two from startup. My 1975 SS seems to be leaning out on turns. I have not experienced this with any of the Bing-fueled BMW bikes I have owned. Has anyone else experienced this tendency? A 74 dual-plugge...

R-90 S Colonial Finds-US $

This is interesting as to varying bike locating and prices. I have just purchased an original-but dual plugged- 1974 R 90 S for right at $4500 (US) ; complete with SHOEI helmet. 69 K original miles. Running in good condition, with original tool kit, and factory manuals. BMW bags still attached. Like...
