Crank Rebuild - Brent Hansen

This may be old news to some but I thought it pertinent enough to share with the group here. I’m currently buried in the most frustrating and continuously disappointing restoration process of my tenure dealing with vintage BMW’s and wanted to give a “shout out” to Brent Hansen. While I intend to ful...

Re: R69S won't keep running

808, Not to hijack but I’m wondering if I’ve had a similar issue on my R50/2. When setting the timing I’ve had to widen the points gap to get the static mark to line up as the points adjustment window will not allow it otherwise. I’ve chased my tail endlessly on this bike and finally have torn the e...

Re: Pushrod tube seals still available from BMW dealer

I’m currently facing this same issue with my R80GS. I installed new pushrod tube rubbers from Euro Motor Electrics last winter and with only 1000 miles on the rebuild I see they’re already cracking. They haven’t started leaking yet but it’s only a matter of time. What a bummer.

Re: spark plug gap, 65R50/2

You’re using the wrong plugs. I can’t recall exactly but from NGK they should be something like B8HS.

Re: 1962 R69s Transmission Oil

Proper technique can result in smooth, slippery shifting in well built transmissions. As others have mentioned, preloading the shifter is essential and while many say you need to pull the clutch and allow the rpms to drop significantly for smooth shifting, I have not found this to be the best practi...

Keihan Stainless Exhaust

In the restoration process of my 1964 R69S and today was the day I had been looking forward to installing my new stainless exhaust system. Generally this is a pretty simple and straightforward job and I didn’t anticipate it would take much more than a half an hour. I unpacked my shiny new set of hea...

Re: R69 ignition retard lever / correct magneto

Hi Starklint- The magneto unit on the R69 is unique to the R68 and R69 only, while all the other models (R50-R69S) share a standard magneto that has no manual advance mechanism. This is the one I have installed at the moment. Guess mine is the standard magneto with no advance mechanism? https://i.i...

Re: Bing carb issue

I’ll second Vech’s suggestion. This is very very common on these old carbs. Always remember that pot metal is soft and these old carb bodies need to be handled gently.
