Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

It was hard to see your images. I am on an iPhone. You need to mount the final drive in the Motul and measure the distance between the two flanges. The proper distance is in the Barrington manual for plungers. You also need to know the thickness of the hardy disc you purchase. There are several thic...

Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

Don't the prewar plungers... and the R51/2... have snap rings? Just looked at the parts book for the prewar bikes, and they definitely have snap rings. I think the R51/2 is the same thing. The "/3" bikes have staked crosses. My R 51/2 did have a staked cross and I am quite certain it was ...

Re: R69s Bings

One last pint of advice. Don’t overtighten the flanges. Not only will the flanges warp, but it does not let the metal walk or grow as it heats up. They warp because they don’t have room to move. Use a NEW wavy washer to stop the nut from backing off, tighten until the wavy washer is compressed and j...

Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

I also just noticed you have snap rings on yours. I have never seen that on an original driveshaft. Anyone correct me if I am wrong, but mine are all staked. Yours have been upgraded. Not bad, just not the original ones. I would question if the length is incorrect and might be putting undue pressure...

Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

I also just measured some u-joints I have here and they indeed measure 19mm x 48mm. I believe this is what is in my R 51/2 but I did not change my u-joint as it was fine. I suggest you try to get your current one to run straight and if it’s still smooth put it back. I do not think the u-joint is you...

Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

Does your driveshaft have a bulb in it to hold the dust seal? If so it is a later driveshaft. If not then it’s a R 51/2 shaft. The R 51/2 also had a smaller seal and no bump in the driveshaft.

Re: BMW R51/2 trasmission

There are many things that can make noise since there are a ton of rotating and meshing components in the gearbox as well as the final drive. You state "noisy", is it a whine, growl, clunk or some other noise? That would certainly help us debug a bit more. In which direction is your drives...

Re: Timing advance

The alternative to brazing the plate would be the caro screw. That would do the same thing.

What you explain definitely points to a worn plate.
