Here's a place just east of

Here's a place just east of Cincinnati, with a good reputation. They redid my '67 R69S engine, including the slingers. The late Lenny Kirkhoff used them regularly, and it's where he sent the engine when he did a complete restoration of the bike a few years ago. Lenny was well known and highly respec...

When I had a similar problem

When I had a similar problem with my '67 R69S I was told by multiple sources to disconnect the speedo immediately, that continued use could cause major, expensive damage. I sent mine to Terry Vrla for repair [terryvrla@hotmail.com], and he did an excellent job at a very reasonable price, especially ...

to answer your questions:

to answer your questions: the speedo is as right as Terry Vrla could make it about a year ago, which means it's more accurate than it came from the factory back in 1967. 600 miles (or 1000 kms) is the standard break in period according to the owner's manual, and actually, with only 10,000 miles on t...

high altitude running

Just want to check out some thoughts about high altitude running. I have a 1967 R69S, bought new and restored with the engine thoroughly gone over about 600 miles ago. The bike is in an excellent state of tune but I can't get it to run much above 70 mph on the level. I suspect this is a matter of al...

Or there could be a problem

Or there could be a problem with the speedo itself, causing the gearing inside to bind. Mine on my 69S was reading way higher than it should have. It needed an overhaul, which I had done by Terry Vrla in Oregon. Continuing to keep the speedo cable connected could cause major, very expensive damage, ...

Terry Vrla actually lives in

Terry Vrla actually lives in Hillsboro, Oregon. You can reach him at TerryVrla@hotmail.com. He's overhauled two speedometers for me, one for an R69s and one for an R100S. He does excellent, meticulous work for a reasonable price, and is very responsive to email and telephone inquiries. I can't recom...

red coating & left arms

As someone who walked into the actual factory in Munich to take delivery of my '67 R69S--which I still have, which I've had restored, and which I occasionally ride-- I can attest to the tank being coated red at the factory. Butler & Smith never laid hands on it. And to forestall any proffering o...

The Hella bar end signals

The Hella bar end signals were a factory-installed option on my '67 R69S, though I don't remember how much extra I paid for them. I know they were factory-installed because they were on the bike when I picked it up at the factory in Munich.
