I've got two pre-war R51's.

I've got two pre-war R51's. The front stand on one of them is about 3 cms shorter than the other. I believe that the shorter version is the correct one but I don't know this for certain

Do NOT use it!!! These

Do NOT use it!!! These gaskets are found in most of the Polish made gasket sets available on Ebay and a few other sites. After I got a set I contacted Wolfgang at RRS Tuning. he confirmed that if you place a gasket between the two halves it allows the oil to seep out and back into the sump without b...

Mark Huggett told me a couple of months ago that he has just had a batch of pre-war front stands made. You can buy direct through his website.

Look at the Links Page at www.theairhead.co.uk.

Dynamo Regulator Conversions near Lincoln has done three of these for me now. He NEVER gets it done for when he says he will and he ALWAYS charges more than you expect but he's still faster and cheaper than his competitors.

Thanks both of you. I've been doing a lot of research and found some original BMW tech specs. It's the 6207 MN they recommend - the TB version simply wouldn't have been around in those days, of course, but is presumably better still.

6207 mains bearings

I've always thought that slash 2's were built using the 6207 bearing with the C3 clearance. I'm working now on rebuilding a 1959 R50 (i.e. pre-slash 2). I've just stripped it to clean the slingers and am going to replace the bearings as a matter of course but I've noticed that the ones in there are ...

the airhead

You're right, of course. The problem is that 'Vintage and Classic BMW's doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as 'Airhead' and, technically, as all these earlier models were air cooled the term is appropriate. In reality the issue is further confused because the term 'Airhead' is not used anywhere n...

R51 Clutch

Hi, There are people on here better qualified than me to answer this, but this is my take. I've rebuilt just three pre-war R51's. I got my latest one back on the road just last week. From my experience with those, and from double checking with the parts book, I'd say you've got a non-standard pressu...

Front Shocks

The front shocks are actually easy to dismantle after you've seen it done once. No special tools and no real force. It will be too late for you but there will be an illustrated step by step guide on how to do this in the Autumn edition of 'The Airhead' ezine (www.theairhead.co.uk). I know because I ...

magdyno

I'd go with Ian's suggestion - using a dremel to cut through the outer link. I suspect you wouldn't be able to slide the rest backwards far enough to get it out though. You'd almost certainly have to push it a bit then use the dremel on one of the pins. All very fiddly. First though I would triple c...
