Re: R26 Black Phosphate Plating

Traditional Parkerizing as used on Harleys, for example, is a bit too gray. Just let the parts pickle longer and you will get black.

Re: 1967 R69S restoration

If you're not familiar, you will soon be - if you do not turn off the gas a bit before stopping, and you sit the bike on the sidestand, they all drip out the mixture screw vent hole. It is how the bowl vents and not an indication of float level. Poor design. Bike looks fantastic, BTW!

Re: Complete bolt kit

Sorry to say, the original bolt market has all but dried up. A few short years ago, you could find them in grab bags on eBay regularly. No more. If you are relatively new to this, you’ll need to dig and research what you need and search high and low for it. BTW, your ‘59 had more black phosphate tha...

Re: Replacing final drive 1959 R60

Therein lies the joys of working on these old BMWs. You can't just bolt virtually anything together without heating, cooling, measuring, shimming, having a ton of special tools and knowledge. I guess that's why we love them so much.

Re: R27 neoprene wheel bearing seals

I think you need different retainers to fit the modern seals, at least you do on the twins.

Re: speedie sleeve

Not on the rear bearing surface - won't work. The sleeves are used on the flywheel to allow the sealing of the rear main seal. No quick/cheap fix for a spun rear main bearing.

Re: transmission sidecar gearing

Looking at the various parts books, up through '59, there is only one part number shown for all models' intermediate shaft, including the R69. Then in '61, there are two part numbers shown, as described above, one for the R26/27/R50/60, and the other for the R50/60/2, R69 and R69S. The teeth on the ...

What other intermediate shaft is there for the Earles bikes?

Re: transmission sidecar gearing

As far as I know, the intermediate shafts are all the same. The first three spur gears are different. The are the exact same gears that the R26/27 came with and will interchange.

Re: Differential timing issue

If you keep at it, the hammer-and-drift method will get you close. The mag rotor very often does not seat perfectly concentrically on the cam. You are just whacking it to a more central position. I've done it to both of mine and now have virtually no differential timing.
