There are a number of ways posted here. As space is so tight when the valves are closed, I usually check the gap when the valve is closed, then rotate the engine and adjust when the valve is open as it gives more space and then check again when the valve is closed. What little original wiring that I've come across on my R12's was cloth. There are retailers out there that sell cloth looms.

Are you planning to rebuild the engine on the R12?

Graeme, I've rebuilt a couple of R12 gearboxes but haven't done many miles on either, but sitting in the garage neither have leaked (having said that I bet when I check next time they'll both be dripping a little). All three of my old BMW's drip a little from somewhere and I keep trays under them in...

I'm in Surrey. I have two R12's and an R51. There are around 10 R12 owners in the UK plus about 5 R51 owners that I know of. Definitely recommend joining the Airhead for UK BMW advice and contacts.
