Re: For those who like special tools

A couple more tools I use in the workshop. This is a little holder for adjusting the end float on the R51/3 rockers. adjust end float on 513 rockers.jpg This is our ultrasonic cleaner being used on the crankcase. When the bottom half was done, we flippedit upside down and did the top half. The clean...

Re: Throttle stops

I have purchased throttle cables and found the ratio of inner to outer cable insufficient to get enough slack. You obviously have a situation that does not give you what you want. Have you considered modifying the cable rather than the throttle grip? I do think Vetch is right about the /2 Vs /5 gear...

Re: Throttle stops

Cables are fine. I can adjust out all the play, but then the maximum rotation is limited by pulling the slide to the top of the carb, rather than using the twist grip stop to limit rotation. The former leads to ends pulling off cables, the latter does not. Since my other BMW is an S1000, requesting...

Re: Rebuilding R51/3 crank in home workshop

PART FOUR Here are some pictures of the process for pressing the crank back together. We made up a very accurate tube which holds the crankpin square is all dimensions for pressing into the centre web. Re: Rebuilding R51/3 crank in home workshop

PART THREE To accurately measure the big end play we made a custom jig. We also purchased a dial guage that measure down to .001mm accuracy. measurement jig.jpg The jig has been designed so that it can measure big end play in both the R50 and R60 crank big ends and can also measure while the crank i...

Re: Rebuilding R51/3 crank in home workshop

PART TWO We pressed the crank apart after we built the various press tools to do the job. making press tools 01.jpg making press tools 02.jpg There are other bits and pieces but I think this should give you an idea of what was involved. All the pieces were made out of mild steel plate or large diame...

Rebuilding R51/3 crank in home workshop

PART ONE I have been working with Doug on overhauling his R51/3 engine. Thankfully in the US and Europe there are many excellent people who rebuild cranks. In Australia the people doing this work are significantly less. So we opted to have a go at doing what we could in the home workshop. Here are a...

Re: How do you fit new needle rollers in rocker arms

Mal - I meant to ask...how many needle bearings went into each side of the rocker? Info I'd seen in the past was it was either 30 or 31 depending on who made the bearings. I think there is just the one part number - 11331261712. Hi Kurt I counted the rollers which I took out of the bike today. 30 i...

Re: How do you fit new needle rollers in rocker arms

Lol, I kept out of this topic until I saw my name mentioned. YEAH, good work and great progress, and THANK YOU so much for not only writing what you found but how to fix it as well. St. Yes St Good to close the loop, so others get an idea, much as I do and I guess you do when we learn from others. ...
