Re: R50/2 Generator low volts

Shane,

Also read my tech corner article from the last issues, it goes through what I need to do on my R 50 S. I had some of the same issues. If you need more help post back here and I will detail some of the items.

Re: Which size timing gears to fit

Please find attached the mp3 file from Mal that you can clearly pick out the sound of the gears without enough backlash. Very interesting to hear it. It is very clear at the end of the audio file.

Thanks Mal!!!

Re: Which size timing gears to fit

Mal, Apologies if I was not specific in my question. In your post you say: So ordered a "0" set - The fitted neatly, rotated freely, so I assembled the engine and gave it a start. Not happy, the gears were fine immediately the bike started but within about a minute they were not happy. So ...

Re: Which size timing gears to fit

Mal, how did you know the gears were “not happy”. What was your method for determining that?

Re: Speedo question

Thats the proper way for a BMW speedometer to swing, clockwise from 1:45(ish) to 10:15(ish). If anyone knows WHY BMW did it this way I would be very interested in that factoid as well as it could still swing clockwise and start at 7:00. 1.2 ratio is most likely an R 50/2, did you have it on the road...

Re: /2 Crank nose bearing advice needed from experienced engine assemblers.

Hunt, one word of caution on your idea. The crank has quite a large bevel at the transition, or at least it looks that way from the picture. If you make a spacer that is going to sit on that bevel, it too needs to have a bevel to sit flush with the front of the crank so the bearing is on solid metal...

Re: /2 Crank nose bearing advice needed from experienced engine assemblers.

Hunt, Looking again at your picture, the bearing is typically a bit proud of the crank surface. I believe this lets the crank gear get pressed against the bearing and hold everything together. If the width of the gear is 2.4mm and their is ~1mm of recess then that would mean there is typically a ver...

Re: /2 Crank nose bearing advice needed from experienced engine assemblers.

OK, wow. Here are pictures of my R 50 S crank and they use the same gears and same front bearing as the R 69 S. You can clearly see that the surface for the gear appears to be longer. Also, you can see that you have a clear bevel at the transition where the original ones do not. I think you need to ...
