Do what works for you

If every old BMW ever made was in perfect original condition, with low miles, then they would not be that desirable - you know supply and demand. If someone has such a bike and the enjoyment of owning it is thinking about how much it is worth - then they should do what works for them. So lots of dif...

the removal tool

It is easy to make one if you have a bench grinder. Just take a high tensile bolt (8.8) that has the same thread as the generator bolt and it needs to be about 6 inches long with thread all the way along. Then grind the threads off the beginning of the bolt for about an inch - so there is no longer ...

mufflers????

The bike looks terrific. You are obviously very keen to have a very original R50S. I am certainly not an R50s expert, however the mufflers you have fitted - are they an after market option for that year bike???? I have not seen them before. Here is a link to a page on /2 mufflers which if you have n...

Yes and yes

This is how I think of it. It may not be the best way and it may actually be incorrect in some way, so I look forward to someone correcting me. My guess is that the ticklers richen the mixture by raising the level of fuel in the float bowels and ensuring that for the given air flowing across the ven...

How is the vibration on the AJS

I am currently riding my son's R60 around. Yes the carbs are interesting - yes it sometimes takes a few kicks to start - but to ride it is a joy - lovely smooth engine, adequate power and rather predictable handling.

Now that AJS of yours - probably not for me - but glad you enjoy it.

the costs can be high

An interesting discussion. I have just finished refurbishing my son's R60 engine. Very pleased with the result - she runs really well for a 50 year old bike - BUT she does not have a new engine. YES we spent well over $5000 Australian dollars on parts. So doing up these engines can be expensive, the...

Have you measured your piston?

The older I get the more stupid I seem to be - cause I seem to know nothing - So I go to Uncle Google all the time seeking advice. Here is a link to an article on seizures (yes pistons not brains). http://www.groupk.com/tec-seizures.htm I would carefully measure the piston - because your piston may ...
