Re: R69s Bings

Paul This is just how I would approach such a problem. You seem to have tried the simple, intuitive things. STEP 1 I would use my digital temperature device, and measure the temp of the carbs, when they are causing the problem. That way you have a point to work from. STEP 2 I would remove the carbs ...

Re: Fuel

This summer, I did an 8,700 m solo r/t from Mass to Alaska on a recently rebuilt R 60/2 engine. I started off using 87 octane, but noticed a significant improvement with higher octanes and by the northern plains was only using 93. Much greater hillclimbing ability and less knocking. well that deser...

Re: R51/3 - metallic ticks from one side of the motor

did you get this sorted?

Another cause can be a bent camshaft.
Dont ask me how I know.

Re: Oily Air Box

From your first photo, you pulled the barrels etc. I suspect you have made a change that is impacting on your crankcase pressure - for example, disturbed rings, broken an oil ring or such. Now the engine is behaving like an exhaust pump, and pushing the oil out past the crankcase breather. However a...

Re: Bing Jetting advise

Lots of good help has been coming your way.. I would not contradict or really add to that detail. I have a digital temperature gauge. When I have one of the bikes reasonably sorted - sort of at the fine tuning level. I use the gauge to assess how hard each cylinder is working. The heat levels change...

Re: What options for identifying a loud tic in left cylinder

Well it got the better of me.... I dived in. Why? Well following another look I thought, Oh the symptons suggest a bent camshaft or a camshaft with very bad wear. So I popped the barrels off. One cam follower had a small speckle of pits, the other three very good. Camshaft may be slightly bent by ab...

Re: Cam mounted tach bearings

Step One: Clean so you can see more detail. If you want more advice, I would suggest, after cleaning, then post photos taken from different angles. Also consider that VDO might have had a special tool to dismantle. It was reasonably common for parts to be made well but not designed to be repaired (t...

Re: What's up in Australia in February 2024 ?

Not so fast young man. There is the Toowoomba Swap Meet on the 3/4th of February 2024 in Toowoomba. It is a huge swap meet, one of the biggest in Australia. Apart from a lot of junk you can buy a lot of rubbish and old stuff. And amongst it a jewel or two. Than there is the Cob & Co Museum in T...

Re: How do you fit new needle rollers in rocker arms

Well that may well be the case. I have new bearings and shaft to fit for the other rockers, so I will measure the relative wear and see if, in my case the exhausts are more worn. Unfortunately I dont know everything that has been done to this engine over it's life. Thank you for coming back and shar...

Re: For those who like special tools

It's fun to see your tools Mac. You put a lot of thought into it. I assembled the rockers in the vice, using appropriate size sockets. Then they usually are too tight and I adjust the tightness with a hammer while holding the rocker assembly in my hand. That usually works very well. What is your ex...
