Re: Rennesport Replica in the works

an interesting project. With nothing else in your shed to keep you busy, I guess you have to find something to occupy your days. Maybe we all have a project bike lurking either in a dusty corner or maybe just in our immaginations. I can see you are turning your imagination into something quite tangi...

Re: New breather plate on 20 degree cam gear

That is very interesting.

I had always expected some assembly lube to dissipate on first or second oil change.
Maybe, given your experience that is not the case.

That first start up is so crucial, it could be easy to over do the assembly lube.

Food for thought.,

Re: Stripped Drain Plug Woes - Update

Quite disappointing for you.

Lets hope the second fix is really good.
I have used helicoils on occasion when there was not a better remedy. They are not my first option.

Fitting new breather plate to 20 degree gears

Doug and Mal are doing some work on Doug's R51/3. The engine had the old single pin breather plate. Given their reputation for failure, seemed that a new style breather plate would be the ticket. Following are some photos taken while Doug and Mal modified the old style 20 degree cam gear to accomoda...

Re: R51/3 exhaust crossover pipe with sump-bolt cut-away

While we are talking R51/3 model, could somebody tell me the correct colour for the sump to be painted.

Black or silver, I guess, but which one?

Thank you.

Re: New breather plate on 20 degree cam gear

"No i didn't find any oil. Looking at Malmac Post, found that need to perform a Pressure leak test, maybe my piston rings didn't seat ." I have a rebore and new pistons and the leakdown test showed quite a bit of gas leak past the rings - hopefully will get better once engine is run in. "just check ...

Re: R50S Restoration

Hi James My case is stamped -0 and I had to go to -5 gears before I had the factory backlash (.015mm measured) I am not saying my case is normal and I would listen to Jan at Salis before I took my individual case as the benchmark. By the same token I am not doubting your experience, James which is m...

Re: New breather plate on 20 degree cam gear

This parts book is relatively clear on what you need: https://www.bmw-einzylinder.de/Start/tips/handbuecher/motorrad/ETL_R50-X_1966.pdf You need the new breatherplate with the pins as part of the casting. You also need the wave washer. And you need a 1mm thick shim. The old springs doesn't work. It...

Re: New breather plate on 20 degree cam gear

Mal, In my opinion, as long as you have the correct spring pressure to push the breather plate against the front cover and seal it you are fine. The older 1 pin breather had a coil spring that pressed against it as well which makes me feel there is more spacing between where the spring sits on the ...

New breather plate on 20 degree cam gear

We are looking at installing a new (cast in pins) breather plate onto a 20 degree cam gear. When the single pin breather plate is used there is a thin flat steel plate that blocks off all the holes in the cam gear. Does anyone know what the function of this plate? We are thinking of removing the pla...
