Does anyone know who the manufacturer was that made the headlight key?
And what the correct length of the steel post should be?

BMW R12 crankcase welding

The metal mix makes welding very difficult if not impossible.
Has anyone had success without creating a moonscape?

BMW R12 Tank Deckel

This cap has no breather holes, yet
another version has them.
Surely this cap is not fit for purpose.
