Re: Reaming data for valve guides?

Some info derived from a history on this subject: Use caution when viewing listed data. 0.04mm is ~0.00157". This is a case where considering the mm->inch conversion of 0.04mm to three decimal places in inch will most probably be catastrophic. When the BMW factory listed their guide reamer size...

Re: crankshaft question/opinions

I have the milling machinery and tooling to do it as Jan processes these bushings to size. His local facility is setup for CNC machining. To each their own, for me, that method is just too cumbersome. As per your friend....'If he can't no one can.'......That is a slight on all the top notch humble m...

Re: crankshaft question/opinions

Proper fitment and setup of the crank rear bearing and engine case bushing is crucial. The Salis BMW Parts rear bushing is a custom made part that Jan markets. The bushing requires the ID to be processed so that it meets the factory interference fit tolerance with the rear main bearing. The process ...

Re: Only modern tires from now on....

I have put Conti GO tires on my /5, and they make a world of difference. I couldn't find them for the /2 when last I looked... Bingo, ContiGo!'s are excellent tires. I have tested Continetal, Metzeler, Michelin, Heidenau and Avons. After thousands of miles and cross-country travel, the ContiGo! hav...

Re: Welding /2 cases

I still generally use ALMg-5, aka ER5356 for most of my exhaust thread repairs (TIG and lathe cut). I collaborated with the apps engineers at Alcotec and for BMW pre-70 cases welding repair, and other BMW cast aluminum parts, and the recommendation was to use ER4145. It is more expensive than some o...

Re: EARLES VS US FORK

From decades of riding thousands of miles on the 55-69 Twins and from the maintenance/rebuilding of them: -Each fork type has its pluses and minuses. -The Earles fork is robust and ideal for sidecar use. This fork design allows the motorcycle to retain its wheelbase, which is helpful when in use wit...
