It was the breather plate rattling. The hole on the aluminium gear was worn out to an oval and the locating pin was worn also giving the whole apparatus a significant freeplay. After my machinist friend bored the hole to a bigger diameter and fitted an oversize pin the rattling went away.

is there any chance that it is the crankcase breather?

I agree on the gear backlash being heard at idle. The valve clearences are ok and the camshaft has some wear but not excessive. The cam followers are new (oversize) and their respective holes have been honed by a competent machine shop. They felt right when i installed them....

But they have different serial numbers and also some differences in the bearings as i remember. I know that you can use a complete R25 gearbox on a R24 motor but is it possible to use just the casing with the shafts of the r 24?

I agree with this but isnt it strange that BMW states a very specific endplay in the gearbox shafts and has the appropriate shims to adjust it ? I mean that the gearbox also has roller bearings just like the crankshaft. Mabe it is because the crankcase is all in one piece and it is machined as one w...

Andreas, I live in Patras and i have sent the crankshaft to Panagakis machine shop. It is a local machine shop that i have worked with in various occasions and have always been satisfied. Who are you proposing ?
