hand control levers

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! I'm in the process of resurrecting a '54 R51/3. While looking over the controls on it, and in my assortment of parts, I have questions about the two different types of levers I have.(all are the "blade" type) 1) Which style is newer, and when was ...

I ordered a bunch of parts a while ago and they had everything, and the parts came thru in a week.

Re: Knobby tires for R50..

Well, that's easy. "We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" But seriously they were in a fight for the...

Re: Crush Washers

I've been known to reuse a solid copper crush washer, but only after annealing them. I don't like my kids to know this because they already think I'm a cheap old man. A better solution is to have on hand a ready supply of your favorite sealing gasket. Here's a place I go to for a great assortment of...

Re: Frame Repair Shop?

Hi St, Sorry to hear about your accident. My brother has a '78 RS (could be '77?) that he's thinking about selling. It does not run, and needs engine work. Was recently repainted factory gold color. Could be had very reasonable. Lives in Albany area. Max is his dealer. I can put you in touch with hi...

Re: De-rusting R25/2 Tank

Here's what I have used to de-rust, and then reline a few tanks in recent years. To seal off BMW tanks I found a plumbing seal in the hardware store, and a hose clamp. I may have added a layer of "cling" wrap under. For the fuel tap opening, I brazed an electrical box "knock-out"...

Re: vibration at certain speed?

Hello all,
Just wondering - what is an acceptable difference in piston weight? My original set of 5 ring, R50 pistons were within 0.70 grams. However my new set of replacement 3 ring pistons are over 10.0 grams different. Seems like a lot, but I don't know.

R50 Top-end refresh

After discovering this past season that exhaust valve lash settings on my 1959 R50 are tightening up in as little as several hundred miles, I've pulled it apart to see what's up. Also a compression test yielded 100psi on both cylinders. So both exhaust seats are pitted and the guides are a little lo...

R50 jetting

I've got a pair of clean, rebuilt, lever top carbs I'm going to put on my '59 R50 while I refurbish the originals. While looking over what internals were fitted thru the years, I noticed at some time the R50 main jet jumped from a 105 to a 120 in the later carbs, while the other components remained ...

Re: Head Torque Technique

The Barrington "Singles" book has a tip which makes a lot of sense to me. Especially for bikes where the head bolts may have
sat a long time; One at a time, loosen 1/4 turn and re-torque to spec.using the pattern required.
