Re: Early pre /2 “sports” gearing?

This could be revisionist, but from this July 1968 service bulletin , it implies it (was always): Sport transmission was for solo bikes Standard transmission was for sidecar work Further distinguishing mark of the two transmission executions constitutes the letter "S" stamped onto the spor...

Re: R51/3 Rear Brake Lever Position

Once the footpeg and brake lever are in the correct resting position, if the throw is off and you are out of adjustment you'll need to rotate the rear lever (on the final drive) on its splines and re-adjust from there.

Re: Welding /2 cases

Lee, From my friend Kevin in Germany: he's asking if my broken R5 head has "ALG2" or "ALG3" foundry mark. I'm guessing all later post-war castings were ALG3 or even better/newer, but read Kevin's info below about welding BMW castings and gotchas and what rod to use: <Kevin> Alg3 ...

The "thumbs up" icon top right of each post/reply, I believe.

I just noticed: it's on replies that aren't your own

Re: R51/3 Rear Brake Lever Position

Hi - pretty sure you need to move your footpeg down a notch on the rear engine mount, and readjust the brakes from there.

As for the exhaust interference, the brake lever look correct to me. Maybe your exhaust isn't fully narrowed up onto the crossover?

Re: 1939 R71 restoration

Thanks Darryl, this is the motor you and I chatted about the night I bought it! Thanks R68 - I'm pleased you chimed in - I've learned many things from your knowledge on here! Details and some of the more rare items on this bike: Engine and frame are from different bikes. While the engine No. 702134 ...

1939 R71 restoration

In 2014 I purchased a rough R71 motor at Veterama Mannheim. Entranced by the allure of building a bike from nothing, I guess. Wouldn't it be fun? Casually, over the next many years I collected original parts. This was going to be a bitsa. About two years ago I got serious with the project. Yesterday...

Re: R51/3 Throttle Cable Conundrum

Hi. I have successfully removed a few mm of casing from an already-made cable before, being very careful with a dremel tool to cut through the plastic and flat metal wound sheathing. You just need to be super careful and not cut any of the inner cable wire strands. Maybe that's helpful for you... -C...
