Re: R50/2 paint

If you’re going to powder the frame, there’s no reason to buy glasurit. Nothing wrong with doing it that way. Many easily available single stage paints are equal to Line-22. As for repainting or not, I get asked this question a lot (as a painter). My standard answer is, it depends on your painter ...

Camping in the Sierra Nevada

As we approach spring (yay!!), you may be thinking about planning a ride through the California Sierra. You’re welcome to stop in at Scottie’s Workshop for a cup of joe and take a load off, take a tour of the shop and check out the bikes.

If you’d like to stay longer, consider camping with us or ...

Re: Left hand mirror hole 1968 R50US

It’s common for the Left hand threaded holes to be tapped to a variety of sizes over the years to fit non stock mirrors or what not. My common repair is to purchase some 7/16” left hand all thread and feeding it into a Collette on the lathe where it can center drilled and tapped for M8x1.25 left ...

3rd Annual Scottie's Workshop & Motofarm Camp & Ride

Continuing our tradition of campouts/rides at Scottie’s Motofarm, this year’s event is planned for Sept 22-24.

Scottie’s Motofarm is a sprawling 3 acre ranch 3 miles east of Murphys CA on CA Route 4. It’s about a 2.5 hour ride from San Jose by the most direct route. The Motofarm features lush ...

Custom R60/2 by Scottie's Workshop

A few months ago we remembered that the Quail Motorcycle Gathering was celebrating the category of "Custom Bikes" and we wanted to build a vintage BMW for the category with the theme "blacked out bike with stainless hardware". So we grabbed a few empty cardboard boxes and began to fill them with a ...

Re: Keihan Stainless Exhaust

Sometimes the Keihan pipes are a dream; sometimes they are a bitch. I have a block of hard wood, with a hole in it to fit the OD of the pipe, split in two, that act like vice jaws. I can put a pipe in the big vice and massage it a bit to fit.

If you can get it all connected and can get pipe 1 ...

Re: Impossible timing

How to set the timing:

Remove the spark plugs. Using a chop stick, or the like, in the spark plug hole. Rotate the motor and find piston Top Dead Center. Now observe the flywheel timing mark and sure you are at OT. If not -- you have problems and need to disassemble to find out what's going on ...

Re: Strange motor behavior at high speed

Too rich at full throttle? What is your altitude elevation? These bikes will do this at 4000+ elevation as the air thins out.

Re: RPM drops when clutch pulled

When rebuilding the engine, did you measure the fore/aft movement of the front crank bearing inside the bearing carrier?

It should be measured using feeler gauges.

BMW Provides several versions of the front carrier retaining plate with differing depths of the lip (retainer plate with the little ...
