Re: Magneto: tightening the Allen bolt (1955 R50)

A little late in coming, but I got it sorted. The 80mm Allen bolt was correct (listed on Salis for all R50 - R69S models). It is in and properly torqued.

I would have noted this sooner but was away several times this year. Thanks Tommy and others for your replies!

Regards,

Re: Magneto: tightening the Allen bolt (1955 R50)

Thanks Dave in MI! I had not looked again, so missed your reply. I have the original rotor and original armature (I swapped from the newer one with 20mm taper). The brushes are lined up fine. Re. the magneto-- I tried inserting various sizes of Allen bolt in the magneto, starting with 55 mm, and end...

Magneto: tightening the Allen bolt (1955 R50)

(I have already posted an inquiry on this subject on the /2 facebook group). Group members have been extremely helpful, but this is an 'old school' question. Here's what I have: -early R50 bike -early 1960s generator -two different armatures, one from original and one from the aforementioned later 6...

Re: generator stuck

A 30mm length of 6mm bolt did the job!. Inserted ahead of the Allen bolt, it made the generator body pop right off.

Re: generator stuck

Thank you for replying! I will try a few things. I decided yesterday to leave it so I could get some advice and then try again.

Re: generator stuck

Thank you for your reply, Kurt! After posting I got thinking once in the house, and decided I would pull the armature out. I find it odd that the generator body is stuck, even though the armature is loose. I could try bolting the armature so it is tight, pulling the bolt, then using the Cycle Works ...

generator stuck

I admit it, I am a newbie to assembling an early R50 from the frame up! Today I installed my rotor, magneto and advance unit, following Doug Rinckes' manual. Moving on, I used the 60mm Allen bolt to fasten the armature to the crankshaft, first chasing the bolt threads with (M8 x 1.25) die. All went ...

Re: R50 rocker bearing shaft replacement

Thank you for taking a moment to reply, James! I plan to have a careful look at them today. I suppose checking for play is done exactly as in /5 machines. Is there a different type (not flat) of feeler gauge, or another method of measuring clearance between the shafts and rockers? Again I always app...

R50 rocker bearing shaft replacement

I have not done this before. Now that my heads are complete, as is my bottom end, I want to do what I can with the rockers prior to installation. Years ago I bought a set of NOS rocker bearing shafts. My shop advises that I dismantle the rocker assemblies and check for wear marks, etc. I have done a...
