Re: '68 R69s base gasket ??

niall4473/schrader7032, Appreciate the replies. Couple of thoughts... From an engineering perspective, the torsional stress issue and the axial flex issue are very different and have different engineering "solutions". That said, they both stress a crankshaft and their combination certainly...

Re: '68 R69s base gasket ??

schrader, The crankshaft "flex" you refer to is real but not the cause of the torsional "vibration" that a harmonic balancer is meant to address. Two very different issues. That said, when the rubber damper ring in the /2 era BMW harmonic balancer wears, the outer metal ring begi...

Re: '68 R69s base gasket ??

niall4473, The pic you posted of the broken crankshaft certainly illustrates a catastrophic failure! That said, after 50 years of riding and wrenching on old BMWs (funny, many were new when I started down this rabbit hole, LOL!), I think your broken crankshaft is more of an anecdotal data point than...

Re: 1965 R50/2 - run-in advice wanted

Magnets are a good idea and easy to install in a /2 oil pan. I wouldn't drop the pan first thing just to install them though. I'd wait until the bike had some miles on it, the pan is leaking, or you have some other reason to do so. In the meantime, you can simply put the magnets on the bottom outsid...

Re: corrosion of floating chamber of carb

Been experimenting with a small bit of Caswell Epoxy Gas Tank Sealer for just this application. Mixed up a very small batch and "painted" it on with a small brush to avoid getting in places I didn't want it. So far so good. Fixed a pinhole and firmed up some "softness" in the bot...

Re: restoration advice for newbie

Been using powder coating for over twenty years now and never had an issue with rust underneath it, at least not that I am aware of. Like any other coating, e.g. paint, plating, etc., proper surface preparation is the key to a quality finish and a long life. When, not if, you get a chip or scratch, ...

Re: OLD MAN SLINGER RANT!!

Thomas, Curious what the background info is to the failure you posted above. Not suggesting things can't go wrong for a variety of reasons, but that looks like it would have given a lot of warning beforehand if it was a big end lube failure. And the piston shows no signs of scoring and small end of ...

Re: OLD MAN SLINGER RANT!!

Seek, I can't tell you a broken rod/trashed crankcase can't happen, I've seen a pic or two that says it can (pretty sure the pics were of a race engine, but it's been a while...). But in all my years riding and working on BMWs (and a wide range of other motors), I've never actually seen and touched ...

Re: Current Values are DOWN!

James, One last thought on this. I'm not (anymore) a "car guy". That said, when I got back from the Mecum Auction on Saturday night, I had a message from a friend inviting me to go to the last day of the Jackson-Barrett Car Auction here in Phoenix. Normally, that auction is either the week...
