Re: R69S-Ignition, Switch Plate and Wiring

From what I gather (since I haven't had the bike once it went into the mechanic's hands) the electrical signal remains intermittent even though he apparently rebuilt the original "switch" and then tried a drop in replacement. When the bike first arrived, and before I turned it over to the mechanic ...

Re: Dash cluster with tach

Tachometer drives were available as an aftermarket accessory from the early 50s, usually by VDO, but some people used Smiths, the Rausch conversion was certainly available in 1961, and possibly a few years before that. The actually BMW tacho drive came out in 1966 I think.
The one in the picture is ...

Re: So where do you live and ride?

Any photos of the bike on the trip, or from earlier rides? I love seeing Earles fork bikes kitted out and dirty.

Re: R69

Why did the R69S require the damper and not the R68-R69 (with their thinner nosepiece crankshaft)? Is it because the higher revolution camshaft, or because of the higher compression? Can I double up on base gaskets on my R69S, lower compression, and safely delete the damper? Is the rubber bushing ...

Re: R69

Nobody needs to believe me if they don't want to, but if anybody wants to read a short article about harmonic dampers , what they do and how they do it, there are hundreds out there, this is just one :-

It is ...

Re: R69

No that is not correct. The barrelbearing was allready introduced with the R68. It's because the crankshaft flexes and a normal bearing would have a hard time at the high(er then the R67) rpm's of the R68 and R69.
With the R69S even more power made the problem worse. Cylinders were falling off and ...

Re: Second petcock

I just gas weld the new stabbing on and weld up the holes for the crossover pipe, no problem at all.

Re: Rear brake arm for sidecar

The only reason for the modified brake arm is to protect the factory in-line hydraulic master cylinder from applying unintended pressure to the sidecar wheel slave cylinder as the rear brake shoe linings wear away.
If the outfit has no sidecar brake, or has a mechanical brake, that modified brake ...

Re: Looking at buying my R51/3

Congratulations on the bike!

Re. Vintage BMW get-togethers, the UK BMW Club Vintage Section has an annual members only rally at Tintern Abbey, but apart from that I don't know of any events specifically for pre-1969 BMWs in the UK.

If you wanted to swap frames I would be willing if you did the transport, would that help?
