There is obviously a too little number as well as a too much number. If the fluid volume is too little, then the gears won't be running in the oil bath and flinging it around the inside of the transmission. If the volume is too much, then the air volume is down and when the oil heats up and expands,...

Back in the day, the seals weren't meant to work with hypoid gear oil. That's why specs were for engine oil. Viscosity of a 90W gear oil and a 40/50W engine oil are about the same-ish. If the owner has changed out the transmission seals, then he'd be good to use gear oil.

Where do you live?

I would certainly measure out the fluid per the specs and see how that fills the transmission. Is it way below the threads? I would certainly not go more than the bottom of the fill hole.

On my other bikes, the filler hole can be used to check the level. On my R69S, the amount of oil added is to the bottom of the threads on the fill hole. So, if you look in through the hole, you should see oil at about that level.

Carbs and throttle cables need to be synched.

I think this whole differential timing mumbo jumbo is for the most part, a great big nothing burger. Why do you say that? Ideally, each cylinder should fire at the same point in rotation. I believe in BMW wiring tech, green wires are power but with a black stripe that means it's switched power.

I replaced the Pagusa cover on my R25/2 quite a few years ago. I got some ideas from the German singles forum. I eventually got it done, but it was a real bear. Not sure I want to do that again.
